The Jackson 5ive (1971): 12 wild facts you never knew

When this cartoon premiered on ABC in September 1971, the real Jackson 5 had already sent their first four singles straight to number one. Michael was just 13. But here's what most fans never realized: not a single Jackson brother actually voiced his own character. Their touring schedule made it impossible. Rankin/Bass hired stand-in voice actors instead, including Donald Fullilove, who later played Mayor Goldie Wilson in Back to the Future, and Edmund Sylvers, who went on to front his own group and score hits like Boogie Fever.

The character designs came from Jack Davis, one of the founding artists of Mad Magazine, which is exactly why those cartoon Jacksons look nothing like typical Saturday morning characters. Animation director Robert Balser had co-directed the Beatles' Yellow Submarine just three years earlier, and he brought that same psychedelic visual language into every musical sequence. The animation itself was produced across three countries simultaneously, London, Barcelona, and Tokyo, with the Tokyo studio later evolving into parts of Studio Ghibli.

Diana Ross actually voiced herself in the pilot episode, cementing Motown's preferred origin myth that she personally discovered the brothers. Each episode featured two complete Jackson 5 songs pulled directly from real studio albums, meaning 46 songs were hidden across 23 episodes, years before MTV made music videos normal. Michael's cartoon pets included two mice named Ray and Charles, a nod to Ray Charles, plus a pet snake called Rosie the Crusher who drove entire plots without ever speaking a word.

This was one of the very first animated series to feature African American characters in leading roles, premiering a full year before Fat Albert. The early laugh track was so poorly timed it stepped over dialogue mid-sentence. And the show was built as a genuine three-continent production in an era before email even existed.

And the bonus: after the show ended in 1972 and disappeared into obscurity, Michael Jackson's Thriller explosion in 1984 accidentally resurrected it. Networks brought the cartoon back into syndication for the 1984-85 Saturday morning season, meaning the King of Pop's biggest solo comeback quietly revived the animated version of his own childhood self.

Spielberg hesitated before taking the job and admitted years later he simply wasn't mature enough to fully capture what the story demanded. Several Black filmmakers were considered first. Quincy Jones read the novel in 1982, fought to get it made for three years, and then also composed the score. Without him it likely never reaches the screen.

Oprah tracked down Spielberg's office herself after casting directors ignored her, left message after message, and when she finally got in the room Spielberg looked at her and said you are Sophia. Then she gained weight for the role, crashed into depression when it didn't come off after filming, and later called it the catalyst for her lifelong struggle with body image.

Whoopi Goldberg was performing one-woman shows in a small San Francisco theater when Alice Walker attended, walked straight to Spielberg, and told him she had found her lead. Goldberg improvised the shaving scene entirely from a childhood memory of her grandmother braiding hair. Spielberg recognized what was happening and just let the camera roll.

Danny Glover softened some of the character's harshest written lines because he felt the uncut script was too cruel to perform. After release, strangers spat at him in public for years. The cast formed a private healing circle in their dressing rooms between takes. Sometimes Glover quietly joined them and apologized for the brutality he'd just filmed.

Eleven Oscar nominations. Zero wins. The reunion scene in the field was nearly cut. Cast members reportedly begged Spielberg to keep it. Alice Walker wept at the first screening and briefly considered pulling her support from the film entirely.

And the bonus: studio executives pushed Spielberg to recast Oprah or cut her role after early test screenings. She found out, checked herself into a weight loss camp convinced she had destroyed her only shot at stardom. Spielberg called her personally and told her nobody was taking Sophia away from her.

Sanford and Son: 15 wild facts you never knew

In 1972, NBC was losing every night of the week. CBS had All in the Family and MASH. Then Redd Foxx arrived and Sanford and Son landed in the top ten within weeks. CBS had passed on the show after Norman Lear offered it to them. The executive who said no later called it one of the stupidest decisions he ever made.

The theme song was composed by Quincy Jones in under thirty minutes. Fred Sanford's signature heart attack bit came directly from Foxx's mother, who would clutch her chest dramatically whenever she wasn't getting enough attention. The show was based on a British sitcom called Steptoe and Son. Richard Pryor and Paul Mooney wrote for the show in season two, and producers watered down most of their sharpest material.

Foxx turned the set into a reunion of his Chitlin Circuit friends. Lawanda Page nearly got fired before a single episode aired. Foxx told producers if she goes, I go. The show ended not because ratings collapsed but because Foxx left for ABC without telling Demond Wilson, who found out from a newscaster in the NBC hallway. Two spinoffs followed. Both flopped within weeks. The IRS eventually raided Foxx's Las Vegas home and took everything. Eddie Murphy paid for his funeral.

And the bonus: in 1991, Foxx collapsed on the set of his comeback show The Royal Family. The crew laughed. They assumed it was the Fred Sanford bit. By the time they understood it was real, he was already gone.

Cooley High (1975): 14 insane behind-the-scenes facts you never knew

The screenplay was never written by a writer sitting at a typewriter. Eric Monte met with the director every day for a month with a stenographer in the room. Their conversations were transcribed. Those transcriptions became the script. The entire film was shot in 25 days on $750,000. It grossed $13 million and became one of the 30 highest-grossing films of 1975.

Only three cast members were professional actors. Everyone else came from the community around Cabrini-Green. Two of the villains were real gang members the director found by contacting the Chicago Police Department. They used their real names in the film. The Motown catalog cost almost nothing to license in 1975. When the leads watched the rough cut before the music was added they thought they had made a bad film. After the color timing and the Motown soundtrack were added, they were stunned.

ABC made a television adaptation and then panicked when test audiences found the tone too dark, stripped out everything that made it true, and made What's Happening instead. Garrett Morris was a real teacher at the time of filming and went directly from this set to the original cast of Saturday Night Live. Robert Townsend's entire screen debut is a 30-second walk-on with one line. Boyz II Men named their debut album after this film and covered its original song a cappella. That album sold over nine million copies. An entire generation learned the name Cooley High from Boyz II Men before ever seeing the movie.

And the bonus: George Lucas saw Glynn Turman's performance and placed him on the shortlist for Han Solo. The reason it was within reach at all is because Eric Monte sat across from a stenographer and told the story of his childhood.
